PHILADELPHIA - The U.S. Senate voted 69 to 30 today to adopt the Infrastructure Investment and Jobs Act, a major bipartisan package for transportation, clean water, renewable energy and broadband. Pennsylvania Senator Bob Casey voted in support of the bill, while Senator Pat Toomey voted in opposition to the proposal.
Philadelphia – Amid a tense election year, deep polarization and a global pandemic, leadership from both aisles of Congress came together last summer to pass a landmark conservation legislation into law. The Great American Outdoors Act, which was signed into law one year ago today, secured permanent funding for the Land and Water Conservation Fund (LWCF) at $900 million annually and $9.5 billion over five years to update America’s aging public lands infrastructure.
Erie, PA – With Pennsylvanians returning to local beaches this summer, a new report warns that more work is needed to ensure that all waters are safe for swimming. In 2020, two Erie County beaches were potentially unsafe for swimming on at least 25% of the days they were tested, according to PennEnvironment Research & Policy Center’s annual analysis of bacteria testing, Safe for Swimming?. The report comes as Congress considers investments in water infrastructure.
Harrisburg, PA - The Pennsylvania General Assembly approved the 2021-2022 state budget bills without including language to extend the statewide preemption on local ordinances related to single-use plastic bans and fees.
PHILADELPHIA -- A group of over 360 local elected officials from across the United States, including 111 signers from Pennsylvania, called on President Biden and Congress for robust infrastructure funding to make our communities healthier and protect the environment. The national sign-on letter, released by PennEnvironment, highlighted how infrastructure investment could unite a divided country and heal economic wounds caused by the COVID-19 pandemic. It called for investments -- essential to protecting public health and addressing climate change -- in five key areas: clean water; transportation; clean energy; nature-based; and solid waste infrastructure.
