Highlights Environmental Champions in competitive house, senate races

PennEnvironment

[Philadelphia] — Today, PennEnvironment announced its slate of environmental endorsements for Pennsylvania’s spring 2020 primary election, including endorsements for Congress, the state House of Representatives, and the state Senate.

“Given the immense challenges facing Pennsylvania and the nation today, it will be more challenging than ever for voters to learn about the candidates on the ballot before Primary Election Day on June 2. We think PennEnvironment’s endorsement is a critical tool to help voters know which candidates are environmental champions as they try to navigate changes in voting dates and the voting process,” said David Masur, PennEnvironment Executive Director.

“Electing environmental champions has never been more important. PennEnvironment’s endorsements serve as a tool to help Pennsylvanians know not only who votes in favor of the environment, but also who uses their platform as an elected official to advocate for bold environmental progress,” Masur noted.

PennEnvironment is endorsing environmental champions in key competitive primary races across Pennsylvania, many of which are going to decide the likely frontrunner for their respective general election race this fall. In these races, PennEnvironment selected a slate of candidates who will lead the transition to 100% renewable energy, work to solve climate change, stand up to the frackers and their lobbyists, and protect Pennsylvania’s great outdoors.

PennEnvironment announced the following federal Congressional Primary Endorsements:

  • Brian Fitzpatrick (1st Congressional District, Bucks County)

  • Mary Gay Scanlon (5th Congressional District, Delaware County)

PennEnvironment also announced the following primary endorsements for the Pennsylvania General Assembly:

Allegheny County

  • State Senator Jay Costa (Senate District 43, Pittsburgh)

  • State Representative Ed Gainey (House District 24, Pittsburgh)

  • State Representative Summer Lee (House District 34, Pittsburgh)

  • Jessica Benham (House District 36, Pittsburgh – Pittsburgh)

Chester County

  • State Representative Danielle Friel-Otten (House District 155, Exton)

Delaware County

  • State Representative Greg Vitali (House District 166, Havertown)

Philadelphia

  • State Representative Mary Isaacson (House District 175, Philadelphia)

  • State Representative Malcolm Kenyatta (House District 181, Philadelphia)

  • State Representative Brian Sims (House District 182, Philadelphia)

PennEnvironment is informing its more than 100,000 members and supporters, as well as the general public, about the endorsements and candidates’ positions. The organization will be urging voters in these districts to support their endorsed candidates on the June 2, 2020 primary ballot.

“Poll after poll shows that Pennsylvanians care deeply about protecting the state’s environment and public health—and they expect the same from their elected officials,” remarked Masur.

“At PennEnvironment, we know that we’ll never be able to compete with the deep pockets of the polluters, who have high-powered lobby firms, make millions in campaign contributions and run glitzy ad campaigns,” noted Masur. “So while we can’t go dollar-for-dollar with the polluters, we know we can go vote-for-vote with them because Pennsylvanians from all walks of life want clean air, clean water and to protect the natural heritage of the Commonwealth.”
