Who we are
PennEnvironment is a statewide, citizen-based environmental advocacy organization. We believe there’s something special about Pennsylvania — something worth protecting and preserving for future generations. Whether it’s a beloved river or stream like the Susquehanna or the Wissahickon, our rolling family farmland, or one of our 120 state parks, Pennsylvania’s natural wonders enrich our lives in countless ways. Yet the places we love and the environmental values so many of us share are too often threatened by powerful industries, short-sighted politicians and more. Defending our environment requires independent research, tough-minded advocacy and spirited grassroots action.
That’s the idea behind PennEnvironment. Together with tens of thousands of supporters from all walks of life, we take the kind of action that wins tangible results for our environment.

What we do
Funded by supporters like you, we research the challenges confronting Pennsylvania’s environment and educate the public about what’s at stake. Through our research reports, news conferences, interviews with reporters, op-ed pieces, letters to the editor, and more, we raise awareness of environmental issues and promote sensible solutions. Our canvassers meet people where they are — in public places or door to door — building awareness, recruiting new supporters and activists, and raising funds to support our work.
When decisions are being made about Pennsylvania’s environment, our elected officials hear plenty from the gas companies, developers and other powerful interests. We make the case for our environment and help people like you make your voice heard, through petitions, emails, letters, phone calls and more, all delivered to the right people just when it matters most.

Putting your support to work
- We've kept drilling away from the Delaware. When fracking came to Pennsylvania, we were among the first to sound the alarm. With your help, we advocated for and won tougher regulations, kept the Delaware River safe from fracking, gathered signatures from 100,000 Pennsylvanians against this dirty drilling, and joined hundreds of local activists in standing up to the frackers threatening our health, forests, communities and waterways.
- We've protected our parks, forests and open spaces. When Gov. Tom Corbett attempted to eliminate the Keystone Fund, one of our state’s core conservation programs, PennEnvironment swung into action. The grassroots action of our
staff and members like you helped save the program. With you at our side, we’ll keep speaking up for our parks, forests and trails whenever necessary.
- We've stood up for our rivers and streams. Whether you’re kayaking in Pittsburgh’s Three Rivers, fishing in the Susquehanna, or walking along the Schuylkill, our rivers and streams are a big part of what makes Pennsylvania so special. For decades, we’ve held the line for our waterways and fought tooth and nail to protect them from polluters. But in 2013, we came closer than ever to our biggest clean water victory in decades when President Obama took a much-needed step to close loopholes in the Clean Water Act that give polluters free rein to exploit the waters we love.
