Who we are
PennEnvironment is a statewide, citizen-based environmental advocacy organization. We believe there’s something special about Pennsylvania — something worth protecting and preserving for future generations. Whether it’s a beloved river or stream like the Susquehanna or the Wissahickon, our rolling family farmland, or one of our 120 state parks, Pennsylvania’s natural wonders enrich our lives in countless ways. Yet the places we love and the environmental values so many of us share are too often threatened by powerful industries, short-sighted politicians and more. Defending our environment requires independent research, tough-minded advocacy and spirited grassroots action.
That’s the idea behind PennEnvironment. Together with tens of thousands of supporters from all walks of life, we take the kind of action that wins tangible results for our environment.

What we do
Funded by supporters like you, we research the challenges confronting Pennsylvania’s environment and educate the public about what’s at stake. Through our research reports, news conferences, interviews with reporters, op-ed pieces, letters to the editor, and more, we raise awareness of environmental issues and promote sensible solutions. Our canvassers meet people where they are — in public places or door to door — building awareness, recruiting new supporters and activists, and raising funds to support our work.
When decisions are being made about Pennsylvania’s environment, our elected officials hear plenty from the gas companies, developers and other powerful interests. We make the case for our environment and help people like you make your voice heard, through petitions, emails, letters, phone calls and more, all delivered to the right people just when it matters most.

Putting your support to work
- Tackling global warming. Pennsylvania is already paying the price as global warming fuels more damaging storms like Superstorm Sandy. Protecting our kids from even more devastating consequences demands bold, swift action. That’s why we’ve fought alongside our national federation and won policies
that are actively slashing global warming pollution from cars, trucks, power plants and more.
- Keeping Pennsylvania safe from drilling. 2013 was one of marked progress in our fight to protect Pennsylvania against Marcellus Shale
gas drilling. We helped deliver the largest fracking petition of its kind in state history, released three new fracking reports, and helped produce a fracking exposé. But the biggest victory of the year came when the state’s heavily-slanted pro-drilling law that once gave drillers carte blanche to drill where they want, when they want, was finally overturned.
- Saving our waterways. Whether you’re kayaking in Pittsburgh’s Three Rivers, fishing in the Susquehanna, or walking along the Schuylkill, our rivers and streams are a big part of what makes Pennsylvania so special. For decades, we’ve held the line for our waterways and fought tooth and nail to protect them from polluters. But in 2013, we came closer than ever to our biggest clean water victory in decades when President Obama took a much-needed step to close loopholes in the Clean Water Act that give polluters free rein to exploit the waters we love.
