On Friday afternoon, PennEnvironment volunteers delivered a collage of hundreds of photo petition valentines to directors of Governor Wolf’s regional offices asking him “to be Pennsylvania’s climate sweetheart.”
Gov. Wolf has recently doubled down on his support for the Clean Power Plan by recommitting to move forward with a proposal this fall, despite a recent Supreme Court ruling that has temporarily halted the plan while the courts listen to legal arguments.
“Eighty-two percent of Pennsylvanians support a strong Clean Power Plan, but polluters and climate deniers are fighting this plan every step of the way,” said PennEnvironment Global Warming Advocate Elowyn Corby. “We’re thankful to Governor Wolf for his leadership in crafting a plan that will improve energy efficiency, protect health and develop cleaner energy sources.”
Teams of volunteers in Philadelphia, Pittsburgh and Harrisburg visited each office while singing ‘Valentine’s Grams’ about the importance of tackling climate change. Photo valentines included encouraging messages including “Governor Wolf, thanks for being our climate sweetheart!”
The Clean Power Plan is the single biggest step the United States has taken to reduce the carbon pollution that is fueling climate change, slashing carbon emissions from power plants by 32% by 2030.
“It's our responsibility to leave the Earth in better shape than we found it. I'm here today, thankful that Governor Wolf is keeping nature close to his heart and showing the environment the love that it deserves,” added Michelle Mockus, a PennEnvironment Climate Defender Volunteer.
Pennsylvanians spoke out overwhelmingly in support of a strong and timely state Clean Power Plan during a public comment period and a series of listening sessions held across the commonwealth in late 2015. Public health advocates, clean energy companies, families and environmental champions all urged Governor Wolf to take action to clean up the carbon pollution that threatens our health, environment and economy.
