Environmental endorsements to inform voters for upcoming Election Day

[Philadelphia] – Today PennEnvironment announced its environmental endorsements for races around the state for the upcoming Election Day on Tuesday, November 4th.

“For the past four years, Gov. Corbett’s and his allies have pushed an anti-environmental agenda, working with the polluters to open a flood gate of policies that mean more air pollution, water pollution and put the places we love at risk,” said David Masur, PennEnvironment’s Executive Director. “We need leaders who can repair the damage to Pennsylvania’s waterways, parks and forests during Governor Corbett’s term and that’s exactly what these candidates will do.”

In the past two years alone, anti-environmental legislators worked with Gov. Tom Corbett to rollback protections for Pennsylvania’s most pristine streams; attack the Clean Air Act; and vote to allow fracking under Pennsylvania’s great state parks and forests.

Few issues in the state angered voters more than Gov. Corbett’s close relationship with the gas drilling industry—and the anti-environmental policies that they worked to pass. This included passage of the omnibus fracking law known as “Act 13,” which stripped Pennsylvania communities of tools to protect themselves from fracking, a medical gag rule against doctors, and weakening environmental protections for the state’s rivers and streams. The law was deemed so egregious that the state Supreme Court, in a bi-partisan decision, repealed some of the most egregious parts of the law.

At the same time, the Corbett administration has been straddled with ongoing cases of drinking water contamination from fracking, and received a black-eye in the media when news stories uncovered far-reaching efforts within the Corbett administration to purposely avoid responding to complaints about health issues triggered by fracking.

This record led to PennEnvironment giving Gov. Corbett an “F” on a recent environmental report card that the organization distributed to over 150,000 Pennsylvanians.

“Pennsylvanians who are concerned about Marcellus Shale gas drilling need to remember which politicians in Harrisburg voted to give gas drilling companies a virtual free pass to put our air, water and health at risk—and which legislators stood up for every-day Pennsylvanians and our environment,” stated Masur.

PennEnvironment is informing its members and the general public about the candidates’ positions and views, and is urging voters to support their endorsed candidates on the November ballot.
