PennEnvironment and Environment America Endorse Patrick Murphy

PennEnvironment is partnering with Environment America to endorse Patrick Murphy for reelection to the U.S. House of Representatives.  Congressman Murphy has been a consistent leader on environmental issues, and is committed to further action for environmental protection once he returns to Congress. PennEnvironment and Environment America believe the 8th district race is important for strengthening the pro-environment majority for the 111th Congressional session and enabling us to bring about much needed change in environmental policy.  Reelecting Congressman Murphy is essential to moving America forward on energy policy and pushing for national action on critical environmental issues such as global warming.

Congressman Murphy has served Pennsylvania’s 8th district in the U.S. Congress since last year, and it is his pro-environment voting record and championing of environmental issues while in Congress that give us confidence that Rep. Murphy will continue to vote for and champion important environmental legislation once he returns to Washington, D.C. 

The 8th district’s clean energy economy has been booming in recent years, highlighted by Gamesa’s wind energy manufacturing facility in Fairless Hills, and Rep. Murphy has championed the clean energy policies in Congress that will support these and future clean energy endeavors throughout Pennsylvania.  

Rep. Murphy was a proud supporter of the Energy Independence and Security Act of 2007, which increases fuel efficiency standards for cars and trucks, provides historic investments in sustainable biofuels, cuts greenhouse gases, and will reduce U.S. oil consumption by more than 4 million barrels per day by 2030.[1] Throughout his time in Congress, Rep. Murphy has fought hard to keep our nation’s waters pure and safe, to create a clean energy infrastructure, to preserve open spaces, and to increase investments in alternative energy. An enthusiastic supporter of bold climate legislation, he supports setting a federal cap on global warming pollution.[2]    

This race is important because it can play a major role in building a pro-environment majority in Congress. With powerful special interests, lobbyists for polluting industries, and a handful of anti-environmental votes in Congress blocking necessary reforms, Pennsylvania needs representatives willing to stand up for solutions to our energy problems and the challenge of global warming.

PennEnvironment is confident that Congressman Murphy will continue to be a dedicated leader in our nation’s capital, who will take on these difficult issues and enact meaningful reforms.  He has the experience, commitment and leadership needed to move Congress toward environmental solutions.  Accordingly, PennEnvironment and Environment America support Patrick Murphy for re-election to the U.S. House of Representatives.
